Seiken Densetsu 3 sound issues?

I just imported this game and started playing it on the retron 5 and the sound and music stops completely when you choose your characters and in menus during gameplay. First I just thought it was a problem with my english patch but I then tried it in Japanese and it did the same thing. Anyone else have this problem?
