Controller can't select any menu options

Hello all.
I have a bizarre issue with all the controllers I attempted to use and found I can do the following:
The Retron Wireless controller can do virtually nothing
NES controllers are able to move up and down on the menu, but otherwise can do nothing
SNES controllers operate in a way that L moves down the menu and X moves up it, but nothing else does a thing
I don't have a Genesis controller handy to see what they can do
The issue is that no button I can push selects a menu option, so I'm unable to change the settings, or even initiate the reset to factory default option via the SD card. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a way to reboot this thing without being able to actually use a menu and/or select something from it?
