Multi Cart Roms Work. Why?

I've noticed doing the ips trick, that whenever I run previously extracted multicart roms to test (not to keep), they work just fine. All games within work fine. So it seems to me that the problem is when the Retron itself EXTRACTS the roms. I wonder if this was limited on purpose to avoid piracy, rather than it being an actual hardware limitation.
