Trouble with Zelda Oracle of Ages (GBC)

Hello everyone, I'm a new member and hope to help expand the compatibility list with some rare games.
I'm having trouble with Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages on GameBoy Color.
When I insert the cart I /always/ get an "Unknown Cartridge". When I try to load it anyway the visuals mess up on the select player screen after the title screen, and so cannot continue. I have completed Oracle of Seasons and it played perfectly.
I have cleaned the cart multiple times.
I first tried it with the firmware shipped with my UK Retron5 which was 1.6. I have updated to 2.0 and still no joy.
(I don't want to update to the 2.2 latest as I've read some game that work perfectly on previous versions crash.)
Oracle of Ages works perfectly on my actual GBA SP, it would be nice to play it on the Retron5 with savestates, but might just have to play it legit.
