Puggsy (MegaDrive / PAL) Freeze

I received Puggsy (PAL) from http://www.myretrogamebox.com/ last month. I didn't remember this as I didn't follow a lot of Sega games in the 90s. It's a fun platformer from what I've played so far, but it freezes within the first few seconds of the 1st boss fight. Audio cuts out and the video just freezes with the two characters on screen.
I suspect it's part of the SRAM anti-piracy feature of the game (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puggsy#An ... y_measures). Evidently there are ways to bypass this in some Genesis/MegaDrive emulators, but there doesn't seem to be a similar option within the Retron5 menus. Thoughts?
