Courtesy of a very nice individual on facebook.

"1) download *.ips or *.ups patch file(s) that you want for the game cartridges you own.

2) Insert Retron 5 SD card into your computer's card reader.

3) Copy or Cut and Paste the patch files you downloaded to a new or existing folder on the SD card. Eject SD card when finished.

4) Insert SD card into the back of the Retron 5

5) Insert cartridge you want to play patched into the Retron 5.

5) Turn on the Retron 5

Applying the patch (from R5 menu):
6) Choose "Game Specific Settings"

7) "Select patch", then browse the SD card to the folder you have your patches saved . Choose whichever one you want to apply.

Settings:
8) You may or may not have to choose "Patch expects header". The individual patch notes should say. Just experiment with it on and off. A message will show at the bottom of the screen if the patch loads or fails to apply.

9) I would enable "separate saves for patch" option

10) Go back to main menu, select "Play game" and the patch will automatically be applied. A message will pop up at the bottom letting you know if the patch loaded successfully or not."

I downloaded a patch for Dragon WArrior 3 (which is Dragon Quest 3 in JP). I put my Famicom cart in my Retron 5 and loaded the DQ3.IPS patch. I got a bunch of gibberish. Did I do something wrong?

Hard to tell. where did you acquire the patch from? If it's from my personal mediafire I maintain i'll take a look at it and see if it needs to be fixed.

And to make sure I'm clear,

Using the DQ3 Famicom cart, trying to apply the IPS patch. Doesn't work with or without headers.

That patch is for the Super Famicom version. Are you using it on the Famicom version of dq3 or the Super Famicom remake?

Yeah that patch is not going to work as it's made for the Super Famicom version as it says in the link.

Try this one instead:
